LIPSTICK
(info obtained from safecosmetics.org and news/au/dailytelegraph/story)
Lead has been found in many lipsticks including major, well-known brands. 61% of lipsticks recently tested contain lead although none of the lipsticks listed lead as an ingredient. The FDA has not set a limit for lead in lipstick, which shows the absence of FDA regulatory oversight and enforcement capacity for the $50 billion personal care products industry.
Exposure to lead can cause a range of health effects from behavioral problems and leaving disabilities to seizures and death. Lead easily crosses the placenta and has been linked to infertility and miscarriage.
Lead builds up in the body over time and applying lipstick several times a day can add up to significant exposure levels.
Lipsticks may also contain butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), a chemical used to makes products glossy. This can also be found in nail polish. BBP can interfere with the healthy development of breast tissue and accumulate in our fat cells. It mimic’s oestrogen and has been linked to birth defects, kidney problems, infertility and breast cancer.
Lipsticks recommended by Beauty With Integrity never contain lead, BBP, artificial colors, flavors, or any chemicals or preservatives.
